What is ACT?

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is popular therapeutic treatment modality which focuses on building a rich meaningful life by pursuing values and increasing resilience to distressing emotions and thoughts. It includes six core principles.

ACT Core Principles

  1. Acceptance
  2. Cognitive Defusion (getting unstuck)
  3. Being Present
  4. Self as Context (perspective shifting)
  5. Values
  6. Committed Action

ACT is unique because it doesn’t try to control emotions, thoughts, or consequences but instead can teach you how to identify what matters most and find ways to consistently take action towards those things. Somewhat paradoxically, the more people are willing to let go of struggling with emotions (acceptance) and instead focus on living out their values consistently, the less they report feeling distressed!

ACT is so popular because it’s part treatment modality and part life philosophy. The six core principles of ACT can be learned and incorporated into your own life in almost any situation. ACT with Intention is designed to teach you ACT’s six core principles quickly and begin actively trying them out immediately.

Once you have these skills you can continue to refine and improve on them on your own forever!
