Professional headshot of counselor, KR Withrow.

KR Withrow, LMSW

Populations: Adolescents, Adults

Topics: Trauma, Brainspotting, EMDR, LGBT+

KR Withrow is dedicated to creating a therapeutic space that fosters care, connection, and curiosity. Specializing in working with the LGBTQIA+ community, women’s mental health, and trauma, KR also supports clients facing depression, anxiety, and OCD. Her work is driven by a deep interest in how individuals navigate the environments and systems that impact their lives. As evidenced by the vigorous house plants in her office and the resident downtown cats she cares for, KR is effortlessly kind and nurturing.

KR’s approach to therapy is grounded in self-compassion and collective support, helping clients reconnect with themselves and others. KR specializes in Brainspotting, an advanced therapeutic technique for treating trauma. Further, she integrates a variety of other modalities, including polyvagal theory, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and systems theory, to meet the unique needs of each client. Many of these interventions share a theme of exploring mind and body connections

Curiosity plays a big role in KR’s sessions, where they encourage clients to explore new perspectives and shift their understanding, no matter how small the change. KR shares the excitement when her clients begin to feel the subtle shifts that lead to big changes, whether it’s processing a tender moment or gaining a new insight into yourself or your past experiences.

Outside of therapy, KR can often be found baking, gardening, or spending time with their partner and four spoiled cats. She enjoys diving into cozy and comforting fiction—unless it’s spooky season, in which case they’ll be deep into folk horror. If you catch them in the car, they’re likely singing along to The Chicks or enjoying the music of Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves, or Boygenius (or a whole list of other favorites!) .

KR recommends books like What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo and The Deepest Well by Nadine Burke Harris to explore the impact of trauma. They also appreciate the work of Kristen Neff on self-compassion, a practice they incorporate into their sessions.

Professional headshot of Emily Key, a licensed counselor in Johnson City.

Emily Key, LPC/MHSP

*Emily is not accepting new clients at this time.

Populations: Adolescents, Couples

Topics: Eating/food concerns, Trauma, Relationships, Body Image

Emily believes in counseling from a holistic approach emphasizing the interconnectedness of mind, body, and spirit. She views clients’ concerns as an indication of unaddressed and perhaps maladaptive coping patterns rather than fundamental, personal dysfunction.

Using a combination of Internal Family Systems therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, she helps clients make sense of their concerns and clarify a direction forward.

Emily is also trained in the Gottman Method and helps couples navigate conflict, infidelity, parenting, and other relational concerns.

Her areas of specialty include anxiety, depression, self-esteem, and issues related to body image/acceptance. Emily is passionate about supporting individuals as they work to discover and/or reclaim their authentic selves. She does this with a warm, engaging, and friendly personality.

Emily works closely with adolescents, adults, and couples. Like our other providers, she is well versed in helping clients navigate many common concerns. Additionally, she is especially passionate about helping individuals who want to transform their relationship with food, body, and self.

She also enjoys working with couples looking to improve their communication, intimacy, and connection utilizing the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy.

In her practice, Emily’s therapeutic approach integrates Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness-based CBT, Polyvagal Theory, somatic interventions, body compassion work, the Gottman Method for couples, and the Health at Every Size and Intuitive Eating frameworks. She hopes her clients feel safe, deeply heard, and empowered during their time together, with a sense of unburdening and equality in the therapeutic space.

As a client you might expect Emily to help you approach ongoing challenges with new compassion, curiosity, and courage—rather than judgment or avoidance. Sessions with Emily are characterized by warmth and gentleness which lays the foundation for curiosity and openness to examine challenging experiences. With these elements in place, Emily shares in the excitement as clarity and hopefulness unfold during sessions.

Emily has observed that people often get stuck because their minds and bodies carry old stories, avoid negative emotions, or rely on protective “parts” that once served them. Working with Emily you can expect to learn how to navigate these obstacles and tap into internal strengths you may not even know exists yet.

When she’s not in the office, Emily loves wandering through antique stores with coffee in hand, working on home restoration projects, gardening, dancing, and simply enjoying time with her husband and kids.

He views his role as a therapist is not to just listen to you, but to help better manage your thoughts and emotions.

Ben is a Licensed Professional Counselor at our Johnson City, TN office specializing in the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety, PTSD, and Panic Disorder. He also works well with depression, life transitions, and marriage/relational problems.

He holds Master’s of Science in Counseling from Milligan College.  He primarily utilizes Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (for OCD/Panic). Ben also has training in The Gottman Method (L1) for couples.

Hi! I’m Noorin…(pronounced: Noreen) and my passion lies in helping people meet and maximize their potential.

I bring a diverse background to my work, from corporate coaching and acute inpatient support to working with individuals, couples, and groups navigating a wide range of life experiences. I have specific experience helping clients navigate trauma and relationships. I utilize EMDR to address challenges related to traumatic experiences.

I also have significant experience helping my clients navigate anxiety, grief, mid-life transitions, and attachment wounds. Issues related to religion, culture, generational traumas, and systemic oppressions are always welcome and respectfully explored.

As the dizzying pace of the world unmoors us, sometimes we hold on to things that are convenient but not necessarily healthy. In sessions we’ll use a strengths-based approach centered on creating a non-judgmental space where you can pause, refocus, and build an anchor of unshakable confidence.

Whether you’re ready to dive deep or prefer to take things one step at a time, I’m here to move at your pace. I also believe that healing doesn’t always have to be heavy, sometimes a light-hearted moment can be just as powerful. It’s an honor to be a collaborator in charting your journey forward, and I genuinely look forward to witnessing, supporting, and celebrating your wins.

Professional headshot of counselor, John Wade.

John Wade, LPC/MHSP

Population: Adults, Couples

Topics: Trauma, Depression, Religious Trauma, Relationships, Suicidality

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

John Wade is a compassionate therapist who is excited about guiding individuals and couples toward healing, growth, and transformation. With a deep commitment to helping clients rediscover joy and develop new perspectives, John believes that each person has the power to explore their own thoughts, find their own solutions, and uncover strengths they may not even realize they possess.

John works with individuals and couples. He has unique experience helping clients navigate trauma, depression, anxiety, addiction, and more.

John has specific experience and training in working with individuals who have experienced spiritual trauma. Whether you are seeking healing from experiences, explore the trajectory of your faith, or reintegrate your traumatic experiences into a newly formed belief system, John brings a thoughtful, empathetic approach to every session.

His path to becoming a therapist was born from personal experience. Having witnessed close friends struggle with military-related trauma, addiction, and suicide, John became deeply motivated to help others.

Through his work, John hopes his clients come to understand several core principles:

  1. A life worth living can be created, even when it feels out of reach.

  2. Joy is not a luxury—it’s essential to our well-being, and it is possible to cultivate it through intentional experiences.

  3. Healing is a journey that takes time, and it’s important to be patient with oneself along the way.

John incorporates a variety of therapeutic modalities into his practice, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Internal Family Systems (IFS). John also has training with The Gottman Method (L1) for couples.

His therapeutic approach aims to create a safe space where clients can experience discomfort as they confront difficult topics, awe as they discover inner strengths, relief from the hurts that brought them to therapy, and ultimately joy as they gain the skills needed to create the life they truly desire. One of John’s favorite moments in therapy is when a client experiences an “aha” moment—when they discover something profound about themselves or view life from a fresh, empowering perspective.

In his own life, John enjoys a variety of activities that help him recharge, including gardening, playing Dungeons & Dragons, 3D printing, painting, and whitewater rafting. He also loves reading, with a particular fondness for The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien and Dune by Frank Herbert.

FAQ

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

Choosing a counselor is a personal but important decision. Research consistently shows that finding a counselor that “fits” is one of the most important predictors of counseling success. Read through our bios and see who resonates with you. If you’re not sure, call us or have our intake coordinator call you. We’ll ask some questions and help get you connected with a great fit!

Probably! We are in-network with BCBS, Anthem, Cigna, Aetna, UHC/Optum/UMR, and Magellan. We want all of our therapists to be in-network with these carriers, however, each carrier has their own rules about who can join their network. In some cases, our Resident therapists cannot participate in carrier networks. We are not in-network with Medicaid and Medicare plans.

If you’re unsure how your insurance works for counseling, reach out and let us know. We’ll be happy to look up your coverage and explain it in detail.

You may also visit our FEES page to learn more.

Our private pay rates range from $85-$115 ($45 for intern therapists) depending on counselor license type. However, if you are using insurance, your rate will be determined by your insurance plan’s benefits. We’re happy to look these benefits up before your first appointment.

All of our counselors are experienced with “generalist” concerns. These include depression, anxiety, life transitions, stress, trauma, grief, and all the concerns related to just being a human. In addition, our counselors are encouraged to develop their own specialties and we have therapists specializing in EMDR for trauma, Brainspotting for trauma, eating disorders, OCD, chronic illness, LGBTQ+, religious trauma, perinatal mental health, and nature based therapies.

We have a great team of counselors and a great reputation across the community. As a result our counselor’s caseloads can be full and we are careful to avoid overworking our therapists! This means availability varies. The best way to find out about current availability is to contact our intake coordinator or have us contact you by filling out our contact form.

If you want to begin counseling ASAP, consider joining one of our groups. Therapeutic groups are the hidden secret of the counseling world. They have more openings, are more affordable, and are incredibly therapeutic.

We’ll try our best to match you with your preferred counselor. If they are not available when you reach out we’ll either give you feedback on when they might next be available or help you get connected with another counselor more quickly. With a large team, we can usually match you with a therapist.

That part is easy! Call us at 423-207-3336 or complete our contact form to have our intake coordinator contact you. If you call and get our voicemail, be sure to leave a message. Our phone line isn’t staffed 40hrs a week but we return every message within the business day!
