Camp Courage
A Therapauetic D&D group For Girls
Does your middle schooler love games and also want to improve their mental health? We’re excited to offer our region’s first Dungeons & Dragons therapeutic group beginning this summer! We can’t wait to invite participants to challenge themselves, explore new skills, and be supported by like minded peers while building a collective D&D campaign.
At Summit Counseling, we understand the challenges young girls face in navigating early adolescence. That’s why we’ve created this unique and empowering group opportunity where participants embark on adventures that go beyond the tabletop, fostering essential life skills and coping strategies along the way.
Why Dungeons and Dragons?
This beloved tabletop role-playing game offers a perfect blend of storytelling, teamwork, and problem-solving—making it an ideal platform for personal growth and development. Each D&D campaign is led by a game-master who sets the overall narrative while each participant creates their own character (and specific character traits) to navigate the game-master’s challenges. Through the creation and progression of their game characters, participants will have the opportunity to:
Build Confidence
Participants learn to make bold decisive decisions through their characters in the face of uncertainty and at times tension. A skill that proves immensely valuable both inside and out of the game itself.
Navigate Emotions
Practice mindfulness and emotional regulation techniques within the game, empowering girls to manage anxiety and stress effectively.
Conquer Challenges
Confront obstacles and setbacks in a safe space, gaining confidence and resilience with each triumph.
Express Needs and Limits
Engage in collaborative decision-making, practice active listening, and learn how to effectively communicate thoughts and ideas within a supportive group setting.
Develop Resilience
Encounter unexpected obstacles and setbacks in the game, teaching valuable lessons in resilience and adaptability that can be applied to real-life situations.
Manage Anxiety
Utilize creative problem-solving techniques and coping strategies within the game, empowering participants to confront and manage feelings of anxiety in a safe and controlled environment.
Each group is led by experienced child and adolescent therapist and D&D game master, Rebecca Lockridge, LPC-MHSP. Rebecca structures each group session to combine the excitement of Dungeons & Dragons with evidence-based therapeutic techniques tailored to the needs of middle school girls. With a focus on inclusion, empathy, and personal growth, every session is designed to foster a sense of belonging and support among participants.
